Those of you who are not transport geeks may have missed the news that the M4 bus lane is to be removed. This seems rather misguidedCollapse )

There is a proposed electric bike gizmo which was being at work today, and leading to debate over whether it will genuinely save pedalling effort, or merely supply a placebo effect. So I ask LJ if anyone can work out (based on the very limited available information) if it will work.

The concept is a pedal which turns itself using an electric relative to the shaft (minds out of gutter, thank you), and by keeping a foot on the pedal such that the pedal remains hoizontal, the turning of the pedal relative to the shaft will lead to the shaft turning. Could this work, or would the torque needed to keep the pedal horizontal remove the benefit from the pedal being rotated?

Link here

"These replace your standard pedals and provide you with assistance to get you up hills, or carry heavy loads. Each pedal incorporates a motor, gearbox, Li-po batteries and a control board. As you pedal the sensors detect your effort and provide assistance. To pedal without assistance, simply flip the pedals over. They unclip and slot into a charger for charging, much like with a power tool. When fully developed they will provide a range of 10 miles and peak power of 200W. They will retail for around £200"

May. 2nd, 2010 @ 10:06 pm What were the Ubuntu folk thinking?

I have Netbook Remix on my netbook, and the move of the minimise/maximise/close buttons to the left is something I could get used to quickly if they stayed on the same side when windows are maximised and the title bar is in the panel.

At least gconf-editor is logical to play with...

If only getting my home key to work again was as easy

We just got a strike of lightning close enough to have the light and sound together, and my balcony door vibrate inwards!

In other news, I may need a boat to get to work tomorrow..

Has anyone seen this in the Guardian this morning? I'm puzzled by the fact that it isn't in any of the other places I look for news.

Has anyone ever seen any? I was putting my little cards on my noticeboard and when I turned the light on realised the utter lack of purple. Then realised I'd never seen any for sale. I need more colours!
